In some countries, secondary schools aim to provide a general education across a range of subjects. In others, children focus on a narrow range of subjects related to a particular career. Which do you think is appropriate in today’s world?
比起全才,培养专业人才应该是大趋势
Some educational institutions around the world focus on providing students with a conventional education which focuses on a wide range of subjects. However, in some schools, students are taught a limited number of topics that relate to specific careers. I believe spending more time on a narrower range of subject matter is the best approach for modern society.
Regarding general education, being exposed to a broader range of subjects allows students to acquire additional areas of interest and consequently, greater opportunities. For example, many artists discover their passion during their formative years and use this experience to propel themselves into that career. Therefore, without a general education, including the arts, people may not be given the opportunity to follow their passion.
On the other hand, focusing on subjects related to a particular career increases students' job prospects. For example, becoming a plumber does not require the addition of an art course to help the student succeed. Focusing on a narrow curriculum means a student will quickly acquire the skills necessary for their future. Therefore, for students who are aware of the career they want, a narrower curriculum is perfect.
Furthermore, the world is becoming more specialized, which is reflected in the job market. Jobs revolving around specific skills and industries, like programming, are increasing and account for a large proportion of high-paying jobs. Therefore, secondary schools focusing on delivering a narrower range of topics to fill these jobs will enable their alumni to better meet the demands of the job market.
In conclusion, some students do benefit from a more comprehensive selection of subjects because of the opportunities it presents. However, opting for a narrower subject matter improves the employability of students and is better suited to meet the requirements of the job market. This is why it is the most adopted approach in today's world.
