In many countries, women are allowed to take maternity leave from their jobs during the first months after the birth of their baby. Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?
利大于弊
Experts say that the first few months of a child’s birth are crucial in establishing a healthy and loving bond between mother and child. That is why working women in many countries have a lengthy maternity leave as part of their benefits package. While this may seem like an issue to some, I believe the advantages greatly outweigh any negatives.
One advantage of granting maternity leave is better peace of mind for working women, which leads to better work performance and job satisfaction. New mothers are naturally concerned for their newborns, so asking them to work in the office like other employees while their newborns greatly need them would affect their mood towards work.
Besides being unable to concentrate at work, new mothers may feel dissatisfied if there is no such leave, possibly causing them to find a more considerate company. Another benefit is that it helps families adjust to the newborn. New mothers can care for their babies during this delicate period, and newborns can experience their mothers’ love, which scientists believe helps brain and emotional development. The extended leave also gives families time to find a caretaker or rearrange work and house responsibilities among immediate family members so that the infant is properly cared for once the mother returns to work.
Nonetheless, from the company’s perspective, the biggest concern about maternity leaves is the responsibilities left behind. Management has to find a temporary replacement or assign another to shoulder more responsibilities until the leave is over. However, that can be resolved with proper planning. Babies do not just pop out overnight. Companies have much time to coordinate with those involved so that the work flows smoothly until the concerned employees return.
In summary, the practice of granting maternity leaves is good for female employees, their families, and companies. Hopefully, more organizations around the world will take note of the benefits and implement it as well.
