More and more plastic is polluting cities, countryside and oceans. What are the problems caused by plastic waste? What measures should be taken to solve it?
可治理,需执行与教育
Among the many environmental problems today, plastic waste is one of the biggest. Though useful to humankind, the abundance of plastic in the environment is causing many problems, which is why steps need to be taken to minimize such wastage.
One problem with plastic is that it lasts for years, making it a perennial eyesore wherever it is found. Unlike biodegradable waste, plastic stays the same wherever thrown or blown. So one can expect a dropped plastic cup to remain in the environment unless disposed of properly. The other issue is that plastic is a danger to other organisms, particularly marine animals. Fish and turtles often swallow plastic bags, thinking they are jellyfish. But because they cannot digest plastic, they eventually choke or are poisoned.
However, such scenarios can be reversed if people become serious about the plastic problem. Strictly enforcing littering laws is one way to ensure plastic is properly disposed of or recycled. Though the laws themselves exist, authorities in many places turn a blind eye to littering as they are more focused on catching criminals. But if law enforcers became stricter, people may think twice about dropping their plastic waste on the ground or in the waterways.
Another measure is to emphasize the importance of minimizing plastic use in school and at home. By doing so, citizens may be prompted to reuse, recycle, or even avoid using plastic, lessening the wastage that annoys the eyes and kills sea creatures.
Although it may take years to clean up the plastic waste currently in the environment, there is still much hope for the future if people begin now. By enforcing the littering law and educating the populace, there is a good chance that plastic will be where it is supposed to be, not littering our land and seas.
