Many countries now have people from different cultures and ethnic groups. What is the reason for this? Is it a positive or negative development?

It is a common phenomenon that many countries have people from diverse cultures and ethnic groups. Several factors can account for the phenomenon and I think it is a positive development as a whole despite some negative influences.
The situation has historical reasons. Many residents are actually descendants of ancient colonists who took over the country hundreds of years ago. For example, Britain used to control a large number of colonies and the colonists’ descendants are now spread almost all over the world.
In addition, the development of globalization has driven labor force from underdeveloped countries to developed countries to seek more job opportunities and better working conditions. Thanks to modern transportation, immigration across the world has become much easier than ever before.
From my point of view, this development has both benefits and drawbacks. One of the most obvious benefits is that multiculturalism formed by communities of various cultures boosts cultural integration, which is beneficial in overcoming social barriers and discrimination.
Moreover, the way of thinking usually varies from culture to culture. When people of different ethnic backgrounds work together, diverse cultural perspectives can inspire creativity and drive innovation. However, cultural assimilation can arise because personal interaction may gradually change people’s perspectives and values and people grow to think and behave alike. As a result, these people no longer care about their origins and traditions.
Historical factors are unchangeable and the trend of globalization is irreversible. Cultural integration is positive to a large extent, but we should also be aware of the consequences of the loss of identity.
