Parents are believed to exert a great influence on their children’s development, while I would argue that the influence from the outside world may gradually become stronger than parental influence.
The influence coming from parents can have some impact on young children. Parents are responsible for teaching good manners and languages at home, so their behavior will be imitated by the young unconsciously. If the adults use rude language in their daily life, their children are likely to talk in an impolite way. On the contrary, a child will always treat others friendly when his or her parents do so towards their neighbors and family members. Another important fact is that bad habits that have been developed from a very young age are difficult to be corrected later in life. Thus, family education indeed affects children’s early development.
Unfortunately, the influence from the outside is of greater importance for children’s later development. Some children are quite selfish before they start school, but they succeed in overcoming selfishness thanks to the school environment where they have learnt the right interpersonal skills to treat others. Even their self-centered parents cannot make them revert to their old self again. Some children may question the practicality of the education they receive at home once they are encountered with different ideas and personalities in public places like school. For example, they may find it cool to make friends with misbehaved kids. Therefore, social environment can change the way children see the world and the way they interact with others.
In conclusion, although the influence exerted by their parents can have an impact on children at certain stages, the outside world may largely reshape a child’s personalities and paths of development.
