It is becoming increasingly difficult for people to find a balance between their work and other parts of their lives in the contemporary world. The main problem in trying to achieve this goal is that advances in technology now make it difficult for people to leave their work in the workplace. There is also a culture of competition in many workplaces that encourage people to work harder than others. While this may seem good for a business at face value, over time this puts a huge strain on workers and may be unsustainable. As such, it’s important to consider ways in which these issues can be overcome.
That employees have to compete with one another has been common for a long time in many workplaces. Sometimes this is explicitly part of the work culture, but more often this is just a result of limited resources; there are only limited promotions and bonuses available, so naturally people must compete in order to obtain them. In the past, people may have worked overtime or tried to come in to work early in order to show their commitment to their jobs.
These days this competition is no longer confined to the workplace alone. Almost all employees of businesses today have mobile phones and other technology that allows them to work even when they’re not in the workplace. All of this can severely affect people’s ability to balance their work and home lives.
It should be made a priority by businesses to ensure that the work-life of their employees does not encroach too much on their personal lives. They may be able to achieve this by putting company-wide policies in place that lock workers out of online workspace after a certain time each day, or which limits work-related phone calls and emails to office hours only. In this way, businesses can help to prevent people from experiencing burnout, which will in turn allow them to be better workers in the long run.
