As most people spend a major part of their adult life at work, job satisfaction is an important element of individual well-being. What factors contribute to job satisfaction? How realistic is the expectation of job satisfaction for all workers?
薪资与成就感并重
An essential goal of adult life is finding a job that one likes. In such a job, work does not feel monotonous. However, people’s definition of job satisfaction often varies, which is why finding a satisfying occupation can be a challenge.
When people think of job satisfaction, compensation is usually what first comes to mind. Though it is not good to love money itself, people need it to sustain their lifestyle, provide for their family, and prepare for unforeseen events. That is why people usually search for high-paying jobs.
The other factor is job fulfillment. While it is great to earn a lot, many still search for meaning in their work, especially as they age. Most people want to feel that they are contributing something of worth to society. That is why good employees sometimes leave their jobs to pursue something else, despite a high income and all the accolades.
Although most people are aware of what will satisfy them at work, it is unrealistic to expect that everyone will achieve job satisfaction. One reason is that everybody’s needs are different. A good salary for one person might not be sufficient for another, requiring the latter to get a side job or leave for higher pay. What’s more, the sense of job fulfillment is a rarity as many of the good-paying jobs are seldom the true interests of the people doing them. Very few employees are willing to give up a secure paycheck to chase their dreams. Thus, many people trudge through the workday, looking forward instead to the leisurely pursuits that make them happy.
In summary, many people hope to be fully satisfied with the career they choose. But because attaining job satisfaction is not always possible, a person should be willing to search for other ways to achieve contentment, so they do not have to leave their work.
