Many young people do not spend their holidays and weekends doing outdoor activities like hiking and climbing in natural environments. Why? How can they be encouraged to go out?
可改变,需各方努力
An observation today is that many young people are not into outdoor activities in their spare time. Though it is not always essential to do so, many wonder why there is a lack of interest and what can be done to change this mentality.
Perhaps the primary reason for this indifference is how they were raised. Unlike before when children were encouraged to stay outside the home, today's parents have become quite overprotective, preferring that their children are safe at home. Thus, it is no wonder why young people do not look forward to a day outdoors. In relation to this is young people’s addiction to technology. To keep children occupied indoors, many parents have allowed their children to keep using electronic devices. That is why young people consider a weekend binge-watching TV series or playing online games as more enjoyable than a sweaty hike in the mountains or a sunburned day at the beach.
However, some concerned individuals want to change this mindset. One way is to regularly introduce students to outdoor activities in school, where children have no choice but to participate. If these can be regularly implemented, chances are young people will develop a fondness for them. Another way is for the government to sponsor more outdoor-related TV programs and infomercials. Since young people are always glued to their screens, the more they see how exciting it is to be outside, the higher the possibility they will try such activities themselves.
To conclude, because of how children are raised nowadays, it is no wonder why very few young people spend their free time outside. But this can be changed. If particular sectors in society are willing to turn things around, we may soon see a time when young people would rather be outdoors than indoors.
