Young people are leaving their homes from rural areas to study or work in the cities. What are the reasons? Do advantages of this development outweigh its disadvantages?
弊大于利
In many places, young people from the countryside head to different cities to either work or study. While everyone has the freedom to choose where they would like to be, some people are concerned about how this constant exodus may affect society.
Perhaps the top reason why this phenomenon is happening is because of the many opportunities in the city. Big corporations are usually in the city because of the large customer base and readily available workforce. Consequently, the best universities are also there because of the job opportunities for graduates and potential students. Thus, many young people from rural areas migrate to the city to study and earn a living.
The other reason for leaving is the lifestyle. Young people today are highly attracted to the buzz of city life. They, too, want to mingle with those in high society, see the attractions, and have access to the many amenities.
Although young people get the chance to fulfill their life goals by moving to the city, unfortunately, this mass exodus of young people negatively affects life in the city, mainly because of overpopulation. As the population keeps growing, the living conditions become worse. Traffic congestion and crime are among the side-effects. This migration also impacts the countryside. Because of the dwindling labor pool, companies are hesitant to invest in the rural areas as they fear operations will not be sustained. The lack of opportunities hurts the local economy and causes even more young people to try their luck in the city.
To conclude, young people are attracted to city life because of what they believe they will receive when they get there. But this trend is badly affecting both the cities and the rural areas.
