Some people think that with the increasing use of mobile phones and computers, people lose the ability to communicate face to face. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

It is argued that the society has begun to lose the capacity for direct communication because of the prevalence of technology. I partly agree with this argument.
On the one hand, face-to-face communication is no longer limited to in-person contact. The abundance of modern technology has provided people with the capability to talk to people from around the world by using the webcams on their computers. For example, Skype and Messenger have allowed citizens across the globe to make friends through video chat, helping them to develop their communicative abilities by interacting with a greater variety of people and cultures. So when they travel to the countries where their foreign friends are from, they do not fear that they will be awkward in a face-to-face conversation.
On the other hand, the overuse of mobile phones and computers has side effects. Opting to use a phone or laptop in social situations can lead to the degradation of the ability to converse in person. These days, some young people who gather for dinner choose to remain on their mobile devices rather than engaging in conversation. This has shown the fact that they no longer know how to start a conversation in reality. In the long run, this weakens their social awareness and decreases their ability to convey meaning and empathy when they talk. Therefore, when misused, technology can negatively affect one's ability to communicate.
In conclusion, the rise of technology has affected communication in both a positive and negative manner. When used correctly, technology can improve people's ability to communicate face-to-face. However, it can erode communication skills if used in the wrong way.
