Some people think that the best way to improve road safety is to increase the minimum legal age for driving cars and motorcycles. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Every year, road mishaps and other occurrences shock and sadden the commuting public. Because of these incidences, some suggest that increasing the minimum legal age to drive a vehicle is the best way to improve safety on the roads. However, I disagree with their statement.
One problem with the idea is that a person’s maturity depends on a number of factors, where age is just a small part. Though we should not hand the keys to someone under sixteen, we also cannot say that a 20-year-old or even 25-year-old is mature enough to drive. In fact, people as old as 30 are sometimes racing down the streets or drinking and driving. Thus, assuming that an increased legal age for driving is the best solution is wrong.
Next, even if a person is deemed mature enough to drive, the question is whether a person really knows how to drive. Sadly, some people learn how to drive from family or friends who may be licensed to drive but not necessarily licensed to teach. So, while a new driver might know the basics of handling a car or motorcycle, he or she might still not be fully equipped to deal with the complexities of driving on a busy highway or navigating through narrow roads with pedestrians walking alongside their vehicle. Instead of just increasing the age and declaring it to be enough, it would be more effective to enhance driving schools in the country to ensure that new drivers are adequately prepared to operate a vehicle.
To sum up, it is clear that increasing the minimum legal age for driving is not the best solution to the road safety problem. Addressing driver’s education is the better solution since it helps ensure that new drivers are ready to drive. Hopefully, lawmakers will consider the merits of enhancing driving schools in their areas to improve road safety.
