An increasing number of people are choosing cosmetic surgeries. Why do people have operations to change the way they look? Do you think this is a positive or negative development?
这是消极的发展
An interesting development now is people’s fascination with changing their looks. Though some still frown upon this trend, many more dream of altering their body. However, in my view, I think this trend is negative overall.
The primary reason for cosmetic surgery is to raise self-esteem. It is often done by people who have been criticized about particular facial or body features, which is why they desire to enhance their looks. The other possibility is for work purposes, especially for those in entertainment. Many celebrities need to look good to attract fans and even the eye of directors and potential product sponsors. So it is not unusual today for these stars to go under the knife to make them look younger, slimmer, or improve other bodily features to remain popular and keep earning.
Though I understand people have control of their bodies, the overall impact is negative. Instead of accepting and loving who they are, many young people dream of physically changing themselves. And sometimes, when they realize that this change is impossible because of costs, they sink into depression and self-hatred, which may lead to something even worse. But not only that, this trend is causing people to focus more on their appearance than who they are inside. That is why many young people are more concerned about fashion and becoming good-looking rather than improving their character and skillsets.
Therefore, though people may have personal reasons for altering themselves, the overall trend is not good for society. Instead of learning to love themselves and becoming better citizens, more and more people are becoming depressed or narcissistic. Thus, authorities should consider how and what to do regarding the increase in cosmetic surgery.
