News media are important in modern society. Why are they so important? Are their influences generally positive or negative?
媒体本身中立
The news media plays an important role in our society. Some people contend that the media has a negative influence while other people maintain that the media has a positive influence. I believe that the media has neither a positive nor a negative influence, as they are simply distributing the news, not creating the news.
The importance of the media has become more significant in recent times as we begin to live in an age dominated by information. In particular, the news media is the main vehicle by which most people acquire important information. For example, if a hurricane is projected to hit a certain area, the news media can warn people to take necessary precautions. With this information, thousands of lives might be saved and this is why the media is so important.
In regard to the influences of the media, it is their responsibility to report the news accurately and objectively. This is underpinned by the fact that incorrectly reporting news can often lead to legal difficulties for news outlets, exemplified by libel lawsuits. By this standard, if they are reporting honestly, then their influence should be neither positive nor negative. In essence, they are delivering the news rather than making and modifying it, this is why I believe their impact is neutral in nature. Overall, it is up to the consumer of the information to decide how they feel about the news and put their own spin on it.
In conclusion, the news media provides invaluable information to society and can save people's lives. In most instances, the news is objective and accurate. After people have received the news distributed by the media, they can then determine how they feel about that news. Therefore, I believe the news media should not be considered a positive influence or a negative influence as it is simply the messenger.
