Some people think that companies and individuals should pay to clear up the pollution they produced and that the government should not pay for it. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Many people argue that it is the responsibility of individuals and companies to deal with the pollution that they have produced, and the government should not be held accountable. I agree to some extent that individuals and companies should pay, but I also believe that the government should as well.
To reduce pollution, many argue that erring persons and companies should be made financially accountable. This is certainly a good idea, as individuals and companies are unlikely to change their behavior without severe penalties. Pollution is a huge problem, so it is vital that we make laws that deter people from contributing to this issue.
However, in my view, the government should still be responsible. The government provides infrastructure for the nation, such as the power plants needed for electricity. Even if people and businesses want to switch to renewable energy sources, they may be prevented because of what the government has in place. Thus, pollution is not solely the fault of individuals and companies.
In addition, the government arguably has a greater responsibility to make better and more informed decisions for the country than individuals and companies. The government has more resources, allowing it to understand the consequences of pollution and do something to prevent it. It is also the government’s job to protect the interests of its citizens by thinking about sustainable ways of doing things and assisting in environmental damage control, even if it is not the government’s fault.
Given that individuals and companies have limited resources that do not allow them to always make the right choices, they should contribute but not be left alone to pay for environmental pollution. Instead, the government should contribute, too, since protecting the citizens is the government’s responsibility.
