Today, the high sales of popular consumer goods reflect the power of advertising and not the real needs of the society in which they are sold. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
广告是消费增长的背后推手
Nowadays, certain goods have become well known, generating high sales domestically and internationally. However, some claim this is due more to advertising rather than necessity. I concur with the opinion that advertising is the driving force behind these sales.
Firstly, as observed, many of these popular items are not necessities, yet people are willing to purchase them regularly. Nearly every day, people line up for expensive cups of coffee at well-known cafes or order the newest smartphone despite having one in good working condition. Many also order the latest gadget accessories to stylize their contraptions, not add to their functions. It is evident that they do this because they were persuaded by advertisers, rather than feeling a genuine need to purchase such items.
Secondly, advertising is what pushes people to buy branded goods that generally have the same function as generic ones. Lines are long for the release of the next iPhone or Samsung despite lesser-known phone brands offering the same features. People are also willing to pay a premium for designer clothes because advertisements continually feature the rich and famous wearing them. So, it is really about the power of advertising.
Nonetheless, there are scenarios when consumer needs drive demand. Every school year, students purchase specific kinds of school supplies due to the requirements of their courses and schoolwork. Calamities may also cause a surge in demand for popular brands of batteries and other emergency supplies because people want to ensure their safety. However, these products comprise a small percentage of the consumer goods market. The high sales of branded clothing, gadgets, toys and games, junk food, and many more are clearly because of advertisements, not because people actually need them.
To sum up, the power of advertising is real, and we can see this in people's shopping habits. People buy these popular consumer goods because of advertisers, not because these goods are actual necessities.
