In most countries, prison is an effective solution for the problem of crime. Some people think a more effective solution is to provide a better education. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
因罪而异,教育为辅
Putting criminals in jail is accepted as an effective way of solving crimes in many countries. However, some people hold the view that education is a better solution. From my point of view, education is mostly effective for minor crimes.
To those who commit petty crimes due to lack of education and awareness of law, it is a more effective solution to provide proper education to them. After all, the focus should be on making them better citizens rather than punishing them for ignorance and I believe these people deserve a second chance. If they can learn skills and knowledge from correctional programs, they will have the ability to find jobs and contribute to the society in a positive way.
However, it is a must to send criminals that commit serious crimes deliberately to prison, giving them enough time to self-reflect and learn from physical punishment, which is also the best deterrent to would-be criminals. If murderers were all sent to attend educational programs rather than spend years behind bars, murder would probably be seen more frequently in the news as the convicts had no fear of law. Only by applying harsh punishment, can we ensure a safe living environment for law-abiding citizens and sustain social stability.
To sum up, prison or education, it is a question that deserves to be thoroughly considered by authorities. To some criminals, we provide education and show compassion and most will be able to have a new start. As to other serious crimes, it is definitely necessary to put the criminals into prison in order to stop more tragedies from happening.
