Some people believe that in order to reduce crimes, prisoners should be given longer prison sentences while some people think there are other alternative ways. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
和判更长时间的刑罚相比,通过其他途径可以更好的降低犯罪率。
Although longer prison sentences may result in a lower crime rate, I think alternative methods, like education, can be a better way to correct illegal behavior.
When prison sentences are extended, this may have a deterrent effect on a wider range of offenders. Either habitual offenders or prospective offenders are afraid of longer imprisonment, which is unbearable torture for them mentally and physically. Thus, they would think twice before they decide to carry out their crime plans.
On the other hand, it is more likely to turn offenders into law-abiding citizens through alternative ways, such as providing vocational training. Longer prison punishment will only isolate prisoners from the society. A direct impact is that they often end up failing to make a living on their own after being released. Eventually, some of them have to commit crimes again. But things will be different once they are offered classes to learn how to earn money in legal ways. After the training, they are equipped with vocational skills that make it easier for them to find employment.
In my opinion, other correctional methods, in particular education, produce better outcomes in terms of reducing crimes. Juvenile offenders commit crimes because they cannot distinguish right from wrong. Staying longer in prison may not help them become fully aware of the consequences of their wrong behavior. So it is necessary to let education experts help them reflect upon what they have done, and guide them to behave in a socially acceptable way before being released. In conclusion, longer prison terms can deter crimes, while other rehabilitation programs, like education and vocational training, can largely prevent more crimes in the future.
