Damage to the environment is an inevitable consequence of the improvement in the standard of living. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
需平衡发展与环保
The goal of nearly every society is to improve its citizens' way of life. However, some people have noted that in the pursuit of a better standard of living, it is expected that the environment will suffer.
In my opinion, I agree with this observation. The more that a society develops, the more natural resources are needed, greatly affecting nature. As cities and towns expand to provide better work or living facilities, fields and forests disappear. When new roads and buildings are constructed or renovated, much dust is thrown into the air, and much demolition debris is added to teeming landfills. There is currently no way to safely and efficiently recycle everything, so nature suffers every time “improvements” are made to society.
Next, even if there are efforts to replenish natural resources, something in nature is changed. For example, though companies plant trees to replace what has been cut down, the surrounding ecosystem is still altered. The trees planted may not be of the same species as what was originally there, and, of course, people need to still trample past the other plants to dig holes for the tree saplings. Efforts to provide sustainable food sources, such as fisheries and farms, require resources from other areas. Even the cordoning off of fisheries and ranches affects the natural behavior of the animals living nearby.
To conclude, it is right for society to aim for improved living standards, but trying to do that without affecting nature is impossible. Nevertheless, everyone should do their best to minimize damage and replenish the earth since it’s the only planet we have.
