In many countries, people need to leave their families and friends to find jobs in other places. Do you think the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?
利弊相抵
A current trend in many countries is for people to seek work away from their hometowns, leaving loved ones behind. Although I understand why they must do it, I believe the disadvantages outweigh the advantages.
Clearly, the reason why some do this is to earn more than what they can get in their home country. In many developing nations, the wages of blue-collar workers are too low to sustain their needs. Yet, if they did the same thing in a first-world country, the salary earned would be more than enough to survive there while sending much back home; hence, they leave. Though far away, the sacrifices are seemingly worth it for these workers and their families.
However, in my view, the disadvantages are much too great. The primary problem is the negative effect on the families. Children often grow up without knowing their absent parents. This usually leads to a lack of discipline in the family, resulting in rebellious children. Other times, teens may seek affection outside the family, possibly leading to teenage pregnancy, abuse, or other issues.
Moreover, spouses, too, may seek emotional support from others, which may lead to a broken marriage or other complications.
Another drawback is the adverse effects on those working away from family and friends. Obviously, homesickness is something they usually feel. Although some people can adjust after a few months, many more remain depressed and lonely, affecting their health and performance at work. If left untreated, such negative emotions can lead to self-harming or even suicide.
In summary, though working far away from loved ones can solve money issues, the many adverse effects negate any gains. Workers should carefully consider these drawbacks before applying for jobs in distant cities or regions.
