财富差距与社会幸福感

Leaders in nearly every society try to make their constituents happy. One prevailing idea is to ensure minimal differences between its wealthiest and poorest citizens. In my view, though leaders should aim to lessen the gap, ensuring there are only small differences is impossible to achieve.

If nearly everyone had the same income level and status, no one would be willing to do the menial jobs which are still needed for a society to function well. Occupations such as garbage collectors, plumbers, and even pest controllers would become vacant because these involve risks and working in unpleasant conditions.

Furthermore, it would be grossly unfair to those with talents and skills to have the same status as those who are not gifted, which is why this idea would backfire. If neurosurgeons, for example, received nearly the same compensation as gardeners, people could become disincentivized to pour in so much time and effort to master such a complicated profession. Society would then suffer because it would lack the highly skilled professionals it needs to serve the community well.

To be clear, I am not saying leaders should not try to lessen the wealth gap. People in need should receive relief and opportunities to improve their lives. However, attempting to zero out the differences will lead to more problems. Rather than trying to equalize everyone, leaders should provide what people, rich and poor, need to be happy, such as improved security, better transportation, and equal access to quality education and good-paying jobs.

To conclude, though it may seem ideal to minimize the wealth gap so that there are barely any differences between the rich and poor, such would cause more issues. Leaders should still do their part to help those below the poverty line, but there should be an effort to improve the aspects of society that benefit all and give everyone a chance to do well in life.That would be the better solution for making life happier for everyone.
