Some people think that the only way to improve the safety of our roads is to give much stricter punishments for driving offenses. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
加重处罚违规驾驶对于提升道路安全的效果有限,并非唯一方式。
Road safety is a big issue in many places. To resolve the problem, some people suggest stricter punishments are needed.
In my view, this is not the only way. Admittedly, stricter punishments can frighten a few, preventing them from going against standard driving regulations. However, such punishments will not significantly decrease the number of accidents and other mishaps on the road because the causes of such have not been addressed.
Road incidences often occur because the drivers involved are not in the right frame of mind for driving. Many times, such drivers are drunk or under the influence of banned substances. Other times, they might be emotionally disturbed, such as still getting behind the wheel despite dealing with extreme sadness. Others have anger management issues and are easily ticked off whenever someone cuts in front or honks excessively. In such cases, increased punishments would not prevent them from driving. A better solution would involve providing more comprehensive driver’s education to instill in individuals the importance of responsible behavior on the road and the decision to refrain from driving if they feel incapable.
Furthermore, stricter punishments will only work if drivers believe they might be caught. Unfortunately, many places lack traffic cameras and police presence to ensure drivers do not break traffic regulations. Other areas may even lack street lights, traffic lights, speed bumps, and traffic signage to prevent accidents. So, there is much more to improving road safety than simply increasing the fees and possible jail times for would-be violators of traffic laws.
To conclude, while increased punishments for traffic violators might work for a few, it is definitely not the only way to improve road safety, nor is it the only way. Traffic regulators should consider other methods like comprehensive driver’s education, sufficient traffic infrastructure, and police presence to reduce untoward incidents on the road. Should these suggested measures be implemented, I am sure roads will be safer.
