In schools and universities, girls tend to choose art subjects, while boys choose science subjects. What is the reason? Should the trend be changed?

The typical subject choices of students at school and university tend to differ depending on whether they are male or female. I believe that everyone should be encouraged to freely choose art or science subjects regardless of gender.
One possible cause of the phenomenon is parental expectations which are based on gender roles. In poorer nations, some families only send their eldest son to university, expecting him to study science which will allow him to find a well-paid job and support his family, rather than pursue what he truly likes. However, despite more women receiving education than ever, their abilities to excel in science are still questioned by their parents who would persuade them to choose an art subject in order to graduate easily.
However, if students have developed bias towards art and science due to gender, then it is crucial that the situation changes. Those who can freely choose their university courses are happier, which is more likely to increase long-term economic productivity. If we expect to see more breakthroughs in science, then girls should receive support when they have decided to become a scientist. In history, male artists constantly made great contributions to inspiring people, so there is no reason to criticize boys when they show more potential in the field of art. Therefore, I believe combating the current trend is necessary as personal development should not be limited because of gender differences.
To conclude, dated parental expectations and gender roles could explain the different subject choices of boys and girls. Overall, it is essential that neither gender is forced into a decision and both males and females are free to pursue their passions at school.
